North Star Rollergirls

The North Star Roller Girls put the rock back into rolling with a night of intense derby action and a celebration of rock legends. Who knows? There may even be an Elvis sighting! For those about to rock, the North Star Roller Girls salute you!

Dearling Physique
Local band Dearling Physique kicking off a Fall tour Thursday at the Kitty Cat Klub. They're kind of an underground sensation in the art scene. Their sound is Joy Division meets performance art. Two live artists, Justin James Sehorn and Jesse Draxler collaborate with Dearling Physique. Fort Wilson Riot and Phantom Tails open on some dates.

Intermedia Arts is proud to present the fourth installment of B-Girl Be: A Celebration of Women in Hip-Hop, a multimedia festival encompassing the four elements of hip-hop: MCing, DJing, breakdancing and graffiti. . This beloved Minneapolis event is a place to make connections, build confidence, sharpen skills and gain access to the tools to create music, film, poetry, rap, aerosol art and dance.
The mission of B-Girl Be is to influence and inspire leadership to change the perceptions and roles of women in hip-hop for current and future generations
On Saturday, September 19th, 2009 B-Girl Be takes the streets again with the B-Girl Be Block Party, an all-day festival at Intermedia Arts that brings international, national and local girls and women in hip-hop together in Minneapolis for music, dance, live mural painting, film and an art marketplace.
Before, during and after the block party, B-Girl Be presents a series of Hip-Hop Dance Showcase Performances and workshops curated by local dancer and choreographer Amy Sackett. Tickets sell out fast!
The celebration continues throughout September and October with Mama Said Knock U Out! an international visual art exhibition showcasing 28 female artists from around the world who use their visual voice to empower, inform and organize. These women are employing hip-hop culture as a means of expression, connection, education and social and political activism globally. Mama Said Knock U Out! will include work in video, photography, painting, sculpture, film, and textiles. National artist Lauri Lyons (New York) will produce a sound and mixed media installation in the main gallery.
Mama Said Knock U Out! runs through October 23, 2009 at Intermedia Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday from 12-6 PM.

ARP! issue release party
ARP! Magazine will celebrate the release of its latest issue, Pipe Dreams, from 7-11 pm at the new Highpoint Center for Printmaking (912 W. Lake St).

The newspapers will probably still be warm from the print oven. (Have you ever smelled a baby newspaper?) Anyway, this one is as fantastic as ever, with articles covering Pipe Dreams of all fashions: on other Planets, in Wisconsin, in South Carolina, on the West Bank and in the Soap Factory, in film (both local and national), in the MAEP, in the Weisman, in dreams, etc.

The $99 Dollar Sale is going on at Soap Factory tomorrow night.
The $99 Sale is an aesthetic melée, a statement about the inherent value of art, and a fabulous fundraiser for The Soap Factory on September 11 and 12, 2009.
Artists from around the country have donated their works, and all proceeds support The Soap Factory, the region’s premier laboratory for emerging contemporary art.
From local luminaries to emerging artists across the country, there will be much to choose from and the elbowing at the door will be intense.
Pre-purchase your tickets and be among the first through the door on September 11 for the pre-sale and fabulous party. All remaining works will be sold on September 12, 9:00-noon, and admission that day is free.

“You’re in the right place...” - Metro Transit
Metro Transit fare during rush hour in the Twin Cities is $2.25 for local trips. The paper transfer you receive as receipt of this transaction is valid for two-and-a-half hours after purchase, enabling you to ride any number of bus routes, as well as the Hiawatha Line’s light-rail service, meeting deadlines and new people along the way. Several years of commuting on the routes and rails can result in a lot of new acquaintances, and a lot of spent transfers. Five local artists have capitalized on all the rides that they have taken, and all of the refuse that was generated, in order to make something new, that will work for anyone's budget and imagination.
In keeping with the theme, the work in RUSH HOUR is priced at rush hour fare: $2.25 per transfer.
Chad Augustin creates a landscape of scribbles, colors and characters in various states of anguish and confusion, capturing a vibrant, dark humor so pervasive in his animations and oil paintings.
Shawn Dalsen, prolific painter and street artist, translates the bold style of his personal work to iconic snapshots bleeding scandal, sex, caricature and the trappings of urban life.
Bryce Jacobson is a newcomer to formal exhibition, making his way from twisted comics and tattoo art to churning out dozens of experimental nuggets and ambiguous narratives, at turns hilarious and bizarre.
Eric Mattheis has recently made a jump into gallery spaces and onto walls with his bubbling, toxic characters and intense color shapes. His transition to the small paper canvas is easy, the results no less striking.
Matt Wells, emerging artist, illustrator and designer, plays with abstraction, battling robots, insane people and the fate of the world with an eye for detail and a feel for off-putting humor.
Wielding an arsenal of inks, acrylics, collage, spray paint, oils, fire, blades, stencils, and diverse methods, the artists of RUSH HOUR have transformed a collection of waste into a unique body of work over several months. The results reveal surprising glimpses into the psyches of these five young men, from the maniacal visions of Augustin’s swift drawings to the graphic intensity of Dalsen’s tortured visages.
In addition to the visual art, St. Stephens Humans Rights Program will be presenting a series of short films documenting issues that affect people in our community (including transportation and healthcare), as well as information about how everyone can contribute to the Program’s mission.
Emerging filmmaker Sam Thompson has produced a viral video to promote the exhibition, featuring music from Samwell Rowan’s new album The Closing Procedure. Thompson recently directed the critically successful independent film Living Arrangements, which debuted at Uptown Theater.
