Intermedia Arts is proud to present the fourth installment of B-Girl Be: A Celebration of Women in Hip-Hop, a multimedia festival encompassing the four elements of hip-hop: MCing, DJing, breakdancing and graffiti. . This beloved Minneapolis event is a place to make connections, build confidence, sharpen skills and gain access to the tools to create music, film, poetry, rap, aerosol art and dance.
The mission of B-Girl Be is to influence and inspire leadership to change the perceptions and roles of women in hip-hop for current and future generations
On Saturday, September 19th, 2009 B-Girl Be takes the streets again with the B-Girl Be Block Party, an all-day festival at Intermedia Arts that brings international, national and local girls and women in hip-hop together in Minneapolis for music, dance, live mural painting, film and an art marketplace.
Before, during and after the block party, B-Girl Be presents a series of Hip-Hop Dance Showcase Performances and workshops curated by local dancer and choreographer Amy Sackett. Tickets sell out fast!
The celebration continues throughout September and October with Mama Said Knock U Out! an international visual art exhibition showcasing 28 female artists from around the world who use their visual voice to empower, inform and organize. These women are employing hip-hop culture as a means of expression, connection, education and social and political activism globally. Mama Said Knock U Out! will include work in video, photography, painting, sculpture, film, and textiles. National artist Lauri Lyons (New York) will produce a sound and mixed media installation in the main gallery.
Mama Said Knock U Out! runs through October 23, 2009 at Intermedia Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday from 12-6 PM.

Green the Block 9/11
Both environmental and economic survival compel America to transition from dirty fossil fuels to clean energy. Through true for everyone, this is especially urgent in our country’s vulnerable communities. The economic collapse has left low-income communities of color particularly vulnerable to high unemployment and rising living costs. These populations also suffer disproportionally from the environmental and public health impacts of climate change. A new, green economy promises the opportunity to fight climate change while simultaneously revitalizing communities that, now more than ever, are struggling from decades of economic and environmental degradation. That is why the Hip Hop Caucus and Green For All partnered to create Green The Block. Green the Block is a national campaign and coalition aimed at helping low-income communities of color become driving forces of the clean-energy economy.
Green the Block’s comprehensive strategy has four primary pillars.
Education & Awareness: Green the Block will raise awareness within low-income communities of color about the particular impacts of climate change and climate policy on their communities. Green the Block will uniquely leverage its strong celebrity relationships to reach these communities with effective spokespeople. Celebrities will make special appearances that highlight the green economy at the grassroots level, as well as create public service announcements and generate earned media. The content of Green the Block’s education and awareness messages and materials will focus on how low-income communities of color can participate meaningfully in the clean-energy debate, and how they can join the movement for a just, green economy. Through effective platforms, including urban radio, mixtapes, and barber-shop materials, Green the Block will also provide low-income communities of color with information about how to live greener, healthier lives, while living within their means.
Grassroots Advocacy: The only way to ensure that climate policy provides economic opportunity and meets the specific needs of low-income communities of color is to involve these communities in national and local policy debates. Green the Block will help low-income communities of color advocate effectively to their Members of Congress and Senators for strong equity provisions in the federal climate bill. Equally important, Green the Block will help communities work with local and statewide officials and leaders in crafting fair and effective implementation plans for green projects funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Youth Activism: Green the Block will place a particular emphasis on keying young people of color into the economic and social growth opportunities of a clean-energy economy. Extending the reach of our “Education and Awareness” strategy, Green the Block will organize an educational tour on the campuses of historically Black and Latino colleges and universities. This tour will inspire and mobilize young people of color to become leaders, innovators, and practitioners in the clean-energy economy. The tour will help build infrastructure on these campuses to organize efforts that engage students, faculty, and surrounding communities in “Green Schools of Economics” and “Green Our Campus” initiatives.
Private Sector Development: Green the Block will provide support to businesses in our target communities through Green For All’s Capital Access Program, which helps green businesses develop capacity through social, intellectual and financial capital via a business incubation model. That support will include a webinar, at least two conference calls, a three-day Business Academy, and print and online tools. These will help businesses develop their basic capacity and, in particular, take advantage of the opportunities of the Recovery Act.

Jaws + Low, Lake Harriet Bandshell
"It’s hard to believe Low has not yet graced a stage in the Twin Cities this year. It might be even harder to buy the fact that Duluth’s world-renowned indie-rock trio is finally returning to town to essentially open for “Jaws” — kicking off the Vita.mn Autumn Movie & Music Series at Minneapolis’s picturesque Lake Harriet Bandshell, for which the band picks the movies. Upon further thought, though, Alan Sparhawk’s and Mimi Parker’s ever-evolving music is a good match for Spielberg’s timeless shark odyssey, the way it can move from tranquil waters and smiley faces to manic urgency and even the occasional severing of limbs. Vita.mn presents its inaugural Autumn Music and Movies Series outdoors at the Lake Harriet Band Shell. Produced in cooperation with the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board, the four-week series features a range of Minnesota musicians paired with their favorite and most inspiring films. Low will take the stage at 7:15 p.m. and play under the stars before introducing "Jaws."
Guests are encouraged to bring their own picnic baskets and blankets, as evenings this time of year in the Twin Cities typically dip into the mid-50s. Food and drink, as well as artist merchandise, will be available on-site for purchase. Check Vita.mn for all updates concerning inclement weather, cancellations and venue changes. The event is free to the public with seating first-come, first-served."
$99 Sale, Soap Factory
The $99 Sale is an aesthetic melée, a statement about the inherent value of art, and a fabulous fundraiser for The Soap Factory on September 11 and 12, 2009.
Artists from around the country have donated their works, and all proceeds support The Soap Factory, the region’s premier laboratory for emerging contemporary art.
From local luminaries to emerging artists across the country, there will be much to choose from and the elbowing at the door will be intense.
Pre-purchase your tickets and be among the first through the door on September 11 for the pre-sale and fabulous party. All remaining works will be sold on September 12, 9:00-noon, and admission that day is free.
September 11: Pre-sale party $20 ticket. 7 to 10 pm with music, beverages and fabulous food.
September 12: The $99 Sale Free Doors open at 9am sharp. 9 – 12 noon. All remaining works are for sale for $99, and may be taken at the time of purchase.
